Vintage New York

YouTube offered the following video as a suggestion alongside another video I was watching. It was one of those random ones that pops up, but their algorithm has clearly pegged me because I was interested.

It’s a fascinating way to spend less than nine minutes of your day. This is footage taken by a Swedish company on a visit to New York in 1911. The video has been upscaled and colorized using AI.

It’s fascinating to see familiar places (like the Flat Iron Building) in a completely different time and context. I particularly liked watching traffic when the camera was apparently on the back of a streetcar trolley.

Kind of cool to see fellow humans in their day-to-day life from more than 100 years ago. The more things change, the more they stay the same.
