So many thoughts and emotions running through my head and heart this week. Here’s just a few of them … sorry in advance
I’ve been avoiding blogging or posting on social media about the protests happening all over this country. I started a post and edited it several times, but could never find the right words. I think I wanted to say something “perfectly” but I that misses the point. The point is to say SOMETHING, anything. I’m angry that George Floyd and countless others have to die at the hands of bad cops. I know not all cops are bad, but the ones that are need to face consequences. I’m sad that I have “friends” who seem to think the Black Lives Matter movement is a personal attack on them. I’m flabbergasted that people that I thought I knew can still be so close-minded.
I started a “digital declutter” this month. I did one last year after reading “Digital Minimalism“. I’m limiting my time on certain apps and my phone. I’ve been spending more time on Facebook than I meant to and I hate it.
I mean Facebook, I hate Facebook. It sucks. I’ve dealt with two posts that completely turned me off to that cesspool. I had one (white) friend upset that we’re in a modern day “witch hunt” because we’re calling all white people racists. I had another friend post a fake news article and then responded with “so many opinions” when I shared evidence of why their article was false. How do you even have a conversation with people that won’t look at anything other than what they want to believe? I’m keeping my account open and will still post stuff there through other apps (like from this blog or from Instagram), but I just can’t do it on there anymore. The “benefit” of Facebook is way overshadowed by the negativity and heartache. I’ll probably still check in every once in a while, but maybe not.
The good news this week is that we have hot water again. Home warranty company approved the replacement and the plumber did an amazing job on the install.
I’m also really happy there’s a new season of Queer Eye and it’s in Philadelphia! It’s such a heart-warming show … and I need that right now.
That’s it. It’s been a rough week. I recognize that I live a life of privilege and I have the ability to just not think about the racism happening every day if I don’t want to. I truly feel for those people who can’t “not think about the racism” and are so disenfranchised by our society that they feel trapped. I want the world to know that I am an anti-racist … I’m not complacent to just be a better person and treat everybody equally now. I’m going to learn how to make a difference, be a better ally, and strive to understand the plight of my fellow humans.
Oh yeah, and there honestly is still a pandemic happening. Just because restrictions are loosening doesn’t mean the virus is gone. Wash your hands, keep your distance, wear your masks.
