COVID-19 diary – week 19

This is just a place where I keep my thoughts, ideas, rants, raves, etc. while trying to do my part to flatten the curve … still … almost five months later. **heavy sigh**

Settle in kids while I tell you about the great COVID-19 quarantine of 2020 that never was. Why do Americans have such a hard time with this? This is a rhetorical question because it appears that most of the people I know and am friends with DON’T have a problem staying home, wearing their masks, social distancing, etc. Although I have seen a few questionable photos from people on their vacations.

Look, I get it. I want to go on a vacation too. We scrapped our plans to visit family in Denver because it’s not safe right now (and all the crap happening with my contract … but also #becauseCOVID). And I know there are safe ways to do it, but seeing photos of people NOT social distancing or wearing masks while on vacation is not the way to do it.

Almost 150,000 Americans have died from COVID since February 29th. That was (at the time of this writing) 148 days ago. That’s over 1000 human Americans per day. But this is just like the flu, right? Three percent of the country has gotten COVID-19 in just over six months. But it won’t make me sick, right? The United States has about 4% of the world’s population and over 25% of the world’s COVID-19 cases. But it’s just a ploy to make the President look bad, right? I know it’s exhausting to read/hear about this disease every day. I know it’s easy to just pretend it’s not happening or that it won’t affect you. But it IS happening and it WILL affect you in one way or another. We HAVE to adjust, adapt, and be smart about this.

Off my soapbox now. Since we canceled our vacation plans this summer, we decided to do an update in our bedroom. We painted, bought some new furniture, a new mattress, and moved a few things around. If we can’t go anywhere, at least we can enjoy our home.

I made waffles this morning on my Oma’s old waffle iron. It’s been quite a while since I’ve done that. I used to make waffles (almost) every weekend. Now it’s more of a treat … but it sure is a nice treat.

We started watching a show called Escape to the Chateau about an English family that purchased an 1800s chateau in the French countryside that’s been sitting vacant for a long time. They have to essentially rebuild it all themselves and it’s pretty fascinating so far.

All-in-all, we’re doing our best to stay home (except trips to pick up groceries and donuts) or enjoy the outdoors (when it’s not 90+ degrees with 90+% humidity). It’s all we can do to stay safe and sane. But we’re handling it. They really are VERY minor inconveniences to ensure we do our part.

Wear your masks. Wash your hands. Keep your distance. Even better, stay home. Be a good human.
